An 11-year-old Santa Maria girl died after being critically injured in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 1 between Lompoc and Vandenberg Space Force Base, California Highway Patrol officers confirmed Monday.
At approximately 5 p.m. Sunday, emergency personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the Sheriff’s Office and CHP responded to a crash on Highway 1 at Santa Lucia Canyon Road, according to Sgt. Charmaine Fajardo.
Driving a Toyota Camry, Jose Alfred Gonzalez, 65, of Lompoc was stopped on Santa Lucia Canyon Road at the intersection with Highway 1 in preparation to make a left turn.
Shane Giles, 21, of Lompoc was driving south on Highway 1 in a Toyota Prius when Gonzales entered the intersection to make a left turn. The Prius struck the left side of Camry.
A passenger in Gonzalez’s vehicle, an 11-year-old girl whose name wasn’t released, later died at Lompoc Valley Medical Center from her injuries.
Giles received major injuries and was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center.
Gonzalez and another passenger, Luz Maria Gonzalez, 59, of Lompoc, had minor injuries and also were taken to Marian.
Highway 1 was closed for more than an hour for the crash investigation.
CHP officers were continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
The intersection of Highway 1 and Santa Lucia Canyon Road has been the site of multiple crashes.
