A Santa Maria man has been charged in Santa Barbara County Superior Court with murder for a fatal shooting Memorial Day weekend during an altercation.
Fernando Camarillo-Cervantes, 18, was arrested June 7, more than a week after allegedly shooting Rafael Santos Toribio, 38, of Santa Maria.
At about 10 p.m. May 30, Santa Maria police officers were dispatched to a reported shooting in the area of Boone and Curryer streets.
Upon arrival, they located the victim lying in the street with an apparent gunshot wound.
Investigators believe Camarillo-Cervantes and others physically assaulted Santos Toribio during a dispute.
During the altercation, Camarillo-Cervantes allegedly shot the victim, which resulted in his death.
Medical personnel arrived on scene and transported him to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In the criminal complaint filed Thursday, the victim is identified as Rafael Santos.
The complaint charges Camarillo-Cervantes with murder plus several sentencing enhancements, including for use of a firearm.
He was ordered back to court on June 17 for a continued arraignment hearing.
Camarillo-Cervantes remained in the custody of the Santa Barbara County Jail Monday night, with bail set at $2 million.
