Two people, one of whom received third-degree burns, were injured while escaping a house fire Monday morning in Santa Maria.

Shortly after 9 a.m., personnel from the Santa Maria Fire Department and Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to the 1500 block of Eagle Street for a confirmed structure fire at a two-story home just east of South Miller Street near Battles Road.

Two adults were in bedrooms and encountered flames as they tried to escape the structure, Santa Maria Fire Marshal Jim Austin said. The residents jumped out of a front window onto a landing near the front door, he added.

Crews began attacking the blaze, but encountered heavy smoke and flames on the home’s first level.

“They couldn’t push in and do anything interior, so they did it from the outside,” Austin said.

After a neighbor reported hearing someone else screaming, other firefighters began searching the burning structure. A primary search did not locate additional victims, Austin said.

Firefighters reported heavy damage in the second level of the home.

“It’s a mess in there,” Austin said.

One adult was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment of third-degree burns.

A second adult male reported minor burns, but declined to be taken to the hospital.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

Officers with the Santa Maria Police Department provided traffic control in the area. Additionally, an American Medical Response ambulance remained at the scene for standby.

Representatives of both Southern California Gas Co. and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. also responded to the scene.

The house reportedly was built in the mid-1980s.

Additional information was not immediately available.
