Two men are facing attempted-murder charges after an argument led to a stabbing Tuesday night in downtown Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.
Officers responded at about 8:45 p.m. to a report of a stabbing on the 500 block of Fig Avenue, a one-block street just off State Street, said Sgt. Ethan Ragsdale.
Officers learned that an argument had occurred between the adult male victim and the two suspects: Jesse Andrew Mendoza, 18, and Matthew Mendoza-Bimbela, 24, both of Santa Barbara, Ragsdale said.
It’s believed that the three know each other, Ragsdale said, and that one of the suspects stabbed the victim multiple times during the argument.
Detectives identified and arrested Mendoza and Mendoza-Bimbela on the 200 West block of West Ortega Street just after 11 p.m. Tuesday, Ragsdale said.
Both were booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail, with bail set at $1 million, Ragsdale said.
The District Attorney’s Office on Thursday filed charges of attempted-murder and assault with a deadly weapon, along with criminal enhancements, against Mendoza.
He was scheduled for arraignment Thursday in Superior Court in Santa Barbara.
It was not clear what charges were filed against Mendoza-Bimbela.
The victim, whose name was not released, was transported by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Details on his condition were not available.
“This altercation was an isolated incident and not gang-related,” Ragsdale added.
