Santa Barbara drivers should prepare to deal with more roadwork on their daily drives.

Starting Sunday, the Highway 101 Castillo Street off-ramp will be closed intermittently for the next two months.

Drivers can expect closures on weekdays and weekends as Caltrans crews work on emergency drainage repairs at the Castillo Street underpass.

There will be full closures of the off-ramp from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and lane closures on the off-ramp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The southbound right lane will be closed at all times to traffic and pedestrians.

Pedestrians will have to use the sidewalk along the northbound lanes of Castillo Street.

Delays are not expected to be more than 10 minutes long, and there will be signage in the area to direct travelers, according to Caltrans.

Locals may know this underpass for being perpetually wet because it dips 10 feet below the water table, which allows groundwater to seep up to the surface.

The drainage work comes after the Santa Barbara City Council recently directed staff to pursue grant funds for pedestrian and cyclist improvements at the underpass. That proposed project is meant to improve safety by keeping pedestrians and cyclists out of the wet roadway.
