Santa Barbara County residents can expect another wet holiday as two storms are set to hit the county back-to-back, beginning as soon as Tuesday and continuing into the weekend.
The peak intensities will begin on Wednesday and last into Thursday, New Year’s Day, according to officials from the National Weather Service. The second peak of the storm’s rainfall is expected to start on Friday night and continue into Saturday.
The rain is expected to range between light and moderate, but will have occasional heavy showers.
The county is expected to see 1-3 inches of rain in most areas, and south-facing foothills and mountains could get 3-5 inches of rain.
Ahead of the storms, the NWS is warning residents that there is a chance of flooding in urban areas and near bodies of water. Coastal flooding is also expected to be near high tide.
“As far as potential impacts, not nearly as significant as last week,” said David Gomberg, a senior meteorologist with the NWS. “However, with that being said, we should see some minor urban roadway flooding as well as some small stream flooding.”
Gomberg added that there is also a chance of rockslides and mudslides due to the rain. Drivers should also be aware of extra debris on the roads due to heavy winds and rain knocking down branches from trees.
There is also a slight chance of flash flooding and minor debris flows near burn scars, but NWS officials say the risk is lower than last week’s storm.
There is also a possibility of heavy winds beginning on Wednesday and heading into Thursday. Reports predict gusts of wind between 30 and 50 mph.
The winds are expected to have significant impacts on San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, and also affect parts of Ventura and Los Angeles counties.
