Two Santa Barbara County Sheriff‘s deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave after fatally shooting a stabbing suspect at Ralphs near Goleta earlier this week.
The Sheriff’s Office released more information Wednesday about the law enforcement shooting and the assault with a deadly weapon call that prompted the initial response to the 5170 Hollister Ave. grocery store Monday afternoon.
At 2:39 p.m., deputies responded to the report of a man actively assaulting a victim with a knife, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Raquel Zick said. An adult male victim was stabbed twice and cut with a knife by the suspect who fled into the Ralphs, she said.
The altercation was allegedly over the suspect abusing the victim’s dog, Zick said.
When deputies arrived, they contacted the stabbing suspect and attempted to apprehend him, Zick said. There was an “altercation,” Zick said, and deputies fired their weapons, shooting and killing the suspect.
The exact sequence of events that happened after the deputies’ arrival and up to the shooting are still under investigation, Zick said.
The deputies involved were uninjured in the incident and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The stabbing victim was treated at a local hospital and has since been released. Their dog was uninjured, according to Zick.
The identity of the deceased has not been released and is pending the notification of the next of kin.
The Sheriff’s Office reported Wednesday that two deputies were placed on paid administrative leave which is department policy after a law enforcement shooting. The department did not report the names and employment details for those deputies.
The California Department of Justice assisted the Sheriff’s Office forensic team in processing the scene, but it is not conducting the shooting investigation, Zick said. The DOJ does investigate certain law enforcement shootings, including those involving unarmed subjects.
The shooting led to Ralphs closing the store for the rest of Monday, and the entire Magnolia Shopping Center was temporarily closed after the incident as investigators responded to the scene. The store reopened Tuesday morning.
Store employees reported hearing four to six shots fired. A video posted to TikTok shows shoppers hearing the gunshots from outside the store and fleeing the scene.
The incident is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
