Two people were seriously injured in a head-on crash on Highway 154 in the mountains above Santa Barbara Tuesday afternoon, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Firefighters and other emergency personnel were dispatched shortly after 4 p.m. to the collision that occurred in the eastbound lanes just east of Painted Cave Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash involved a Subaru and a Tesla, the CHP said, with at least one of the vehicles briefly catching fire.

The Subaru driver suffered major injuries while the Tesla driver sustained moderate injuries, said Karen Cruz-Orduña, spokeswoman for the Fire Department.

Both were taken by American Medical Response ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Their names and details on their conditions were not available.

Highway 154 was closed in both directions for a time after the collision.

One lane was reopened for alternating, one-way traffic at about 5:20 p.m.

Two dogs that were in the Tesla were taken to the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter in Goleta, Cruz-Orduña said, adding that they were not injured.

Cause of the crash was under investigation by the CHP.
