A four-vehicle crash killed three people and injured two others Sunday night on Highway 1 between Lompoc and Gaviota. 

Shortly after 6 p.m., personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, California Highway Patrol and other agencies were dispatched to the incident on Highway 1 near San Julian Road, county Fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash involving four vehicles, Safechuck added.

Two patients were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment of major injuries, Safechuck said. 

An adult male was taken by ambulance while an adult female was transported by CalStar medical helicopter, Safechuck added.

CHP officers from the Buellton area office were investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. 

Highway 1 remained closed in both directions for a time Sunday night, with Lompoc police assisting at the barricade near the intersection with Highway 246.
