Three people were killed and five others were seriously injured Saturday in a vehicle collision in Isla Vista, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. at El Colegio Road and Stadium Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Three vehicles were involved in the collision, and one reportedly was driving recklessly and ran a red light, the CHP said.

Heavy extrication was required to free some of the victims from the wreckage, fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli told Noozhawk.

In addition to the fatalities reported, two patients suffered major injuries and three had moderate injuries, Bertucelli said, adding that a “multi-casualty incident” was declared.

The names of those killed were not released pending notification of relatives.
