Santa Barbara County law enforcement agencies were sending 52 sworn personnel to Los Angeles Saturday evening to help quell violent protest that have wracked the city over the last few nights.

Officers and deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, the Santa Barbara Police Department, and the cities of Lompoc and Guadalupe were headed south to an undisclosed staging location, according to Raquel Zick, sheriff’s public information officer.

The assistance from local agencies was made through mutual-aid agreements under the state Office of Emergency Management.

A curfew from 8 p.m. Saturday until 5:30 a.m. Sunday was ordered for the entire city of Los Angeles.

Violent protests in Los Angeles and cities across the nation have broken out the past few days in the wake of George Floyd’s death Monday in Minneapolis at the hands of police.

A video circulated on social media shows a white officer, Derek Chauvin, with his knee on Floyd’s neck for several minutes.

Floyd, an African-American, pleads for relief, saying he can’t breathe, before becoming motionless. He was declared dead a short time later at the hospital.

Chauvin and three other officers present were quickly fired, and Chauvin subsequently was arrested on third-degree murder, manslaughter and other charges.

No charges have been announced against the other officers.
