Five people were taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon following a single-vehicle crash on Highway 101 in Summerland, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred shortly after noon in the southbound freeway lanes at the Summerland exit, said Officer Jonathan Gutierrez.

The vehicle, a 2019 Chevy Silverado pickup, went off the roadway into a construction zone, struck a sign, then rolled several times down a large embankment to the adjacent railroad right-of-way, Gutierrez said.

It came to rest on the driver’s side, he added.

The female driver, a West Hills resident, along with a 79-year-old woman and three juveniles were taken by AMR ambulances to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Gutierrez said.

Their names and details on their conditions were not available.

Also responding to the incident were crews from the Carpinteria-Summerland and Montecito fire protection districts.

The crash remained under investigation by the CHP.
