UCSB Arts & Lectures will present a program of free family friendly music with Sonia De Los Santos, titled En Casa con Sonia. The on-demand video (no live stream; about 45 minutes) will be available to view March 13 through March 20. Register by 10 a.m. March 13 for access.

A native of Monterrey, Mexico, Sonia De Los Santos is hailed by Billboard as “one of the Latin children’s music artists you should know.” Recognized for her career with the celebrated Dan Zanes and Friends, her first solo family music album “Mi Viaje,” won a Parents’ Choice Foundation Gold Award and its follow-up “¡Alegría!” was nominated for a Latin Grammy.

With songs in Spanish and English inspired by Latin American rhythms and North American folk traditions, En Casa con Sonia offers a personal, yet universal, musical story that highlights joyful music-making and cultural bridge-building.

“I’ve given a lot of thought to the responsibility I have as an artist working with children and the importance of my role in their lives to present a message of hope and an opportunity to imagine a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow,” De Los Santos said.

Born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, De Los Santos said she can easily find the things in the world that bring her joy. In “¡Alegría!” (Joy!) her second family album, she shares some of the themes that make her happy: migrating butterflies, waking up early, wildflowers, maracas, being grateful to her parents, playing with her band and singing about birds.

These songs in Spanish and English are inspired by various Latin American rhythms including son jarocho, cumbia, gaita, currulao and huayno hailing from Mexico, Colombia and Peru as well as the North American folk traditions from the United States.

The concert also includes songs from “Mi Viaje,” which reflects De Los Santos’ experiences growing up in Mexico and moving to another country, learning about other cultures and in the process, feeling closer to her own heritage.
