Evenings at Elings, a monthly reggae music series that focuses on bringing reggae legends back to Santa Barbara, opens with Grammy Award winner Mykal Rose, Friday, Aug. 20 at Elings Park. Don Carlos will headline the performance on Friday, Sept. 17.
Benefiting the Elings Park Foundation, Evenings at Elings is a family friendly series that opened with Pato Banton and local reggae band Cornerstone on July 2. It is presented by En Fuego Events.
Guests can bring blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy the sun going down over Santa Barbara. Firestone Walker Brewing Co. and Cali Squeeze seltzer will be available for purchase.
“For me, the magic is all about two words: kids free,” said Dean Noble, Elings Park executive director. “Evenings at Elings is the perfect way for families to relax on the grass and enjoy music while the sun sets.”
Sharing the stage with Rose on Aug. 20 will be Santa Barbara reggae band King Zero, Free Love Project, and DJ Marco. The event will be emceed by Winston the Cool Ruler from the Reggae Sound Clash and KJEE.

For some 25 years, Rose has been recording and performing his brand of militant, hardcore Jamaican music to the delight of reggae fans worldwide. As a solo artist, with Black Uhuru, and back as a solo artist, the “Ruff” Rose has achieved great success throughout his career, even as different Jamaican musical styles have phased in and out of popularity.
As a solo artist, Rose regularly tours the U.S. and Europe, and has maintained his Jamaican fan base with hit singles on the island and abroad.
Carlos, who performs on Sept. 17, will be joined onstage by Santa Barbara reggae band Cornerstone, and DJ Marco. From 1989-94, Carlos was the lead vocalist for Black Uhuru. He sings about peace and love, generosity and righteousness.
During the ’80s dance-hall mania, Carlos had five Top 10 hits, “Late Night Blues,” “Nice Time Tonight,” “Dice Cup,” “Hog & Goat,” “I’m Not Getting Crazy” and “Spread Out.”
