A missing Kern County man was found deceased Thursday near the Santa Barbara County Main Jail, several days after being released from custody, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

David Eric Mireles of Shafer, 53, had been booked into jail custody on Aug. 19 on suspicion of misdemeanor driving under the influence and was released the next day, the morning of Aug. 20, sheriff’s spokesperson Raquel Zick said.

Deputies were notified five hours after Mireles’ release that he was a missing person out of Shafter, in Kern County, per Zick.

They searched “the jail property and surrounding area, including nearby businesses and locations known to be frequented by individuals recently released from custody,” but Mireles was not located at that time, she said.

Daniel Berroteran — who identified himself as a family member posting on behalf of Mireles’ son, Austin — said on GoFundMe that Mireles was “at risk with health conditions.”

A social media account associated with Austin said Mireles had no phone, wallet or ID on him when he was released from jail.

Mireles was found Thursday “beneath brush on a hillside adjacent to the Main Jail administration building,” Zick said.

“His location was obscured from Honor Farm Road by brush and was not visible from the walkway. To see the location where Mireles was found, a person would need to leave the walkway, enter the brush several feet and look down into the vegetation,” Zick said.

He was confirmed deceased by Sheriff’s Office deputies, American Medical Response and Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

His cause of death was not released, but Zick said there are no signs of foul play. She said he was “known to have multiple medical conditions.”

It is believed Mireles “had likely been at that location since shortly after his release” from jail, she added.

The official cause of death was under investigation by the Coroner’s Bureau as of Friday.
