The Santa Maria couple killed last week when a driver reportedly ran a red light and slammed into their vehicle have been identified as Randall Richard Kern and Marichu Polancos Kern, according to authorities.

On Aug. 2, Santa Maria police identified the husband and wife who died after the Aug. 1 crash as Mr. and Mrs. Kern.

A death notice from Magner-Maloney Funeral Home & Crematory provided the first names for the 68-year-old husband and his 55-year-old wife.

They were killed in a two-vehicle crash at approximately 9:15 a.m.. Aug. 1 at Stowell and Bradley roads.

A 20-year-old Santa Maria woman driving east on Stowell Road struck the passenger side of a southbound vehicle with two occupants, the Kerns, on Bradley.

“Based on witness statements and evidence from the scene, it appears Driver 1 was eastbound on Stowell Road when she ran the red light,” Sgt. Michael McGhee said.

The husband and wife died due to their injuries.

The 20-year-old driver was cooperative, remained on scene and provided officers with a statement, McGehee said. Police did not release the driver’s name.

At this time, it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision, he added.

Funeral plans have been arranged for the Kerns, according to Magner-Maloney, which is handling the arrangements.

Recitation of the Rosary and Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church in Orcutt. Burial will be private.
