A pedestrian died Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle in Santa Maria, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.
At approximately 6:15 p.m. Saturday, police officers responded to an incident involving a pedestrian hit by a vehicle at the interaction of West Main Street and Russell Avenue, Sgt. Shane Armstrong said Sunday.
They located the injured 68-year-old woman in the eastbound lanes of Main Street.
An American Medical Response ambulance crew transported the woman to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment, but officers later learned she had succumbed to her injuries.
The driver involved in the incident, whose name was not released, remained at the scene and cooperated fully with officers, Armstrong said.
Preliminary findings indicate that neither alcohol nor drugs were contributing factors, Armstrong added.
The identity of the woman was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
Members of the Police Department’s Traffic Bureau were actively investigating the incident.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Officer Jensen at 805.928.3781, ext. 1233.
The incident marked the second recent fatal crash involving a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in Santa Maria, where an 84-year-old was killed in early December.
Another crash involving pedestrians left one man dead and a second person injured in Goleta on Christmas Eve.
