A suspect in the 2023 shooting death of a Santa Maria man — and the wounding of three others — was arrested Wednesday in Bakersfield, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.

Two other people believed to be involved in the killing of Arthur Pichardo, 20, were already in custody, Lt. Paul Van Meel said.

All three were minors at the time of the shooting, Van Meel said, and have been booked into Santa Barbara County Juvenile Hall.

At approximately 12:20 a.m. on Oct. 21, 2023, officers and other emergency personnel responded to a report of multiple shots fired on the 1000 block of North School Street.

The shootings occurred at a large backyard party and stemmed from an earlier altercation, according to police at the time.

The other three victims, one juvenile and two adults, had non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

On Wednesday, Santa Maria detectives requested the assistance of the Kern County Sheriff’s Department in arresting one of the suspects, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant alleging homicide with a criminal street gang enhancement, Van Meel said.

The remaining two suspects were already in custody on unrelated charges, and have since also been charged with the homicide and the gang enhancement.

“All of the suspects were juveniles at the time of the homicide,” Van Meel said. “Accordingly, their names and identifying information are not being released at this time.”

This investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and anyone with information on the case to asked call Detective Brian Santiago at 805.928.3781 x1362.
