A shooting in north Santa Maria left one man dead and injured several other people early Saturday.
At approximately 12:20 a.m., officers with the Santa Maria Police Department and other emergency personnel responded to a report of multiple shots fired on the 1000 block of North School Street, police Lt. Daniel Rios said.
The shooting at a large backyard party killed an adult male and wounded at least one other person, who was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, Rios said.
An altercation occurred before the shooting that injured multiple people, Rios said.
“We don’t feel there’s any danger to the community. It does appear to be isolated,” Rios said.
It’s too early to say whether the shooting was related to gang activity, he added.
Detectives and crime lab personnel responded to the home to investigate the incident and remained at the scene late Saturday morning.
The name of the man killed was withheld pending notification of relatives.
The name and condition of the person taken to the hospital were not available.
Investigators believe more witnesses still need to be interviewed related to this shooting.
Partygoers and those with information about the case can contact Detective Brian Santiago at 805.928.3781, ext. 1362. The Communications Center may also be reached at 805.928.3781, ext. 2277.
This was the second shooting that injured more than one person at a party in Santa Maria this month.
On Oct. 14, three people were wounded, one seriously, during a Halloween party shooting on the 1300 block of Yale Place. On Friday, police announced they had arrested a suspect in that shooting incident.
