Out of the Box Theatre Company continues to bring “out of the box” musical theater to local stages with its production of “Assassins,” the provocative musical by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman, April 10-19 at Center Stage Theater.
Blending biting satire with an unforgettable score, ‘Assassins’ explores the lives of nine men and women who either killed (or tried to kill) one of the presidents of the United States, according to Out of the Box.
From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald and beyond, the stories of the country’s most successful and would-be assassins intersect in unexpected ways, creating an unnerving look at some of the most shocking moments in U.S. history.
“Rather than presenting history as distant and dusty, ‘Assassins’ invites audiences into a surreal carnival game where ambition, grievance, and notoriety collide,” the theater company said. “From heartfelt ballads to vaudeville-style numbers, Sondheim’s score shifts seamlessly in tone, revealing the humanity, delusion, humor, hatred, and heartbreak within each character.”
Under the direction of Samantha Eve, the production highlights the uncomfortable questions at the musical’s core: Who gets remembered? Who gets heard? And what happens when the promise of the American Dream feels out of reach?
“Assassins” first opened Off-Broadway in 1990 and later received the Tony Award for Best Revival in 2004.
Note: This production contains mature themes, including depictions of violence, simulated gun use and gunshots, strong language, use of a racial slur, and references to real-life events.
The musical explores complex and potentially sensitive topics such as mental illness, political extremism, and the motivations behind acts of violence. Recommended for audience members 13 and older.
Tickets can be purchased through the Center Stage Theater box office at www.centerstagetheater.org.
