Santa Maria High School will present the show “Even Steven Goes to War,” written by Allison Gregory, and staged at the school’s historic Ethel Pope Auditorium in April and May.

“Even Steven Goes to War” invites audiences to step into the vivid imagination of a 10-year-old boy.

“The story follows his heartfelt and adventurous quest to find his grandfather, who disappeared during the Vietnam war,” according to the school’s theater department. “Balancing playful innocence with political gravity, the play offers a unique perspective on how children process history, loss, and the enduring power of family.”

Performance dates and times are 7 p.m. April 24, 25, 30, May 1, 2; matinees, 2 p.m. April 26 and May 3.

Tickets are available at the door or in advance at https://santamariajuhsd.graystep.com/Index.aspx#/5/product/11220.

“Being a part of ‘Even Steven Goes to War’ has given us many opportunities, not just for self-growth, but for friendships. “We can’t express enough how grateful we are,” said I lucion Gonzalez and Alyssa Vargas, who play Even and Corey.

“I am incredibly proud of our theater students for the dedication, perseverance, and remarkable adaptability they’ve shown throughout the adventure of reviving the Santa Maria High School theater program,” said teacher Gaspar Onofre-Almanza.

“Watching them bring back life into this department has been a privilege, and I can’t wait for our community to see their hard work shine on the big stage,” Onofre-Almanza said.
