A fire that broke out in a detached garage and spread to a single-family residence in Lompoc on Wednesday claimed the lives of two family cats and caused major damage to both structures, according to city officials.

Emergency crews first responded to the 100 block of A Street at around 7:15 a.m. for a report of a fully engulfed garage.

Lompoc Fire Department spokesperson Emily Prueitt said the structure contained “a large amount of ammunition, which was detonating in the fire.”

The fire was knocked down by 7:45 a.m., per Prueitt, but both the garage and the home sustained major damage.

While no people were injured, the family lost two pet cats to the fire, according to a GoFundMe that went up on Wednesday.

GoFundMe organizer Angelique Calderon said her sister, stepfather and uncle lived in the A Street home and “lost nearly everything.”

“As they begin to navigate this unimaginable loss and rebuild their lives, any support is deeply appreciated. Donations will help with immediate necessities such as food, clothing, and other essential expenses,” Calderon said on the account page.

Prueitt said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
