A new roundabout near Old Town Goleta is open.

It opened Friday at the intersection of Pine Avenue and Ekwill Street with one travel lane in each direction, providing northbound and southbound access on Pine Avenue.

The roundabout was constructed as part of the city’s Project Connect and comes about three months after two new Hollister Avenue roundabouts opened on the edge of Old Town Goleta.

Project Connect is the city’s largest capital improvement plan, and its goals include improving pedestrian access, safety, road conditions and building connections through Goleta, and increasing stormwater flow capacity in San Jose Creek.

The main project areas are Hollister Avenue, Ekwill Street, South Kellogg Avenue and Fowler Road.

While the roundabout is open, motorists can still expect construction in the area for the Ekwill Street extension project.

Along with the roundabouts, the project includes building a new road, the Ekwill Street extension, from Kellogg Avenue to Fairview Avenue, expected to open “later this year,” according to a city press release.

Additionally, construction will extend Technology Drive, linking it to South Kellogg Avenue.

The project seeks to address the “inadequate east-west circulation” of Hollister Avenue and the lack of direct access to some portions of Old Town Goleta and the Santa Barbara Airport, according to the city.

“This project will relieve regional congestion along Hollister Avenue, improve traffic circulation in Old Town Goleta, enhance bicycle and pedestrian circulation, and improve access within Old Town Goleta and to the airport,” according to the city.

Goleta advises motorists to expect occasional lane shifts and allow extra time to travel through the area.
