Authorities have released the name of the pedestrian killed while crossing West Battles Road in Santa Maria on Sunday night. 

Veronica Medina Jimenez, 39, of Guadalupe, died after she was struck by a vehicle on Battles Road just west of South Broadway, police Sgt. Shane Armstrong said Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 8:40 p.m. Sunday, Santa Maria Police Department officers, along with personnel from the Santa Maria Fire Department and American Medical Response, were dispatched to the 100 block of West Battles Road regarding numerous reports of a woman struck by a vehicle, police said.

She was crossing Battles Road outside of a marked crosswalk when she was struck by the westbound vehicle, police added.

Firefighters and AMR personnel immediately began life-saving measures at the scene, police added. 

The critically-injured pedestrian was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center, but later died, according to police.

The area where the crash occurred sits near multiple  apartments and single-family homes with people crossing Battles Road to reach shopping centers on both sides of the road west of Broadway. 

Police initially said Jimenez lived in Santa Maria, but have since confirmed she was a Guadalupe resident.

The vehicle driver, a 36-year-old Santa Maria resident, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police added.

A GoFundMe site has been set up for Jimenez’ family to pay for funeral expenses.

The GoFundMe page said Jimenez had two children and that her father Miguel Jimenez is known by many as a soccer referee in Santa Maria. 

As of Thursday, the page had raised more than $500 toward the $5,000 goal. 

Along with the GoFundMe site, the family also plans to hold other fundraisers to help cover costs. 

The collision remains under investigation by the Santa Maria Police Department Traffic Unit.
