Two officers were injured Tuesday night when two Santa Barbara Police patrol vehicles collided in downtown Santa Barbara.

The two officers were responding to an “urgent” request for backup on the 500 block of State Street, both using lights and sirens, when their vehicles collided at the intersection of Cota and Anacapa streets around 9:30 p.m., Lt. Ethan Ragsdale said.

City firefighters, police officers and two AMR ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

Both of the officers were injured in the crash and transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Ragsdale said. One reportedly suffered moderate injuries and the other had minor injuries.

They were in stable condition as of early Wednesday morning, Ragsdale said.

Anthony Castrejon told Noozhawk he was washing his car across the street when he saw the crash.

He said the collision occurred when one patrol vehicle was going straight on Cota while the other was turning right.

Castrejon said he pulled an injured officer out of one of the vehicles.

The police units were reportedly responding to an incident at a bar on the 500 block of State Street.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no other injuries were reported.

“Because of the nature of the collision, the Santa Barbara Police Department requested assistance from the California Highway Patrol, which responded to investigate,” Ragsdale said.
