People’s Self-Help Housing (PSHH) has received a $100,000 grant from Wells Fargo in support of Central Coast students enrolled in its education program and to help its newest Learning Center at Buellton Garden Apartments.
“For families with school-aged children, PSHH’s eight onsite Learning Centers offer a safe, engaging environment where students receive homework assistance, participate in enrichment activities, build confidence, and develop skills that support long-term academic success,” PSHH said.
“These year-round services are all provided at no cost to the families, thanks to partners like Wells Fargo,” PSHH said.
The funding will equip the Learning Centers with needed materials, having already supplied the new Buellton classroom with Chromebooks, arts and crafts, binders, paper, and other educational resources in its first weeks of programming.
The grant will also aid in staffing across the program, ensuring students have dedicated onsite educational support throughout the school year.
“If it weren’t for Wells Fargo, we wouldn’t be on this path,” said Kris Reid, PSHH director of education. “Their support has allowed us to prepare our classrooms right in line with the new school year, so we can welcome new and returning students immediately.
“Instead of waiting for other funding to become available, we’re able to purchase technology, educational supplies, and curriculum materials now, giving children the strong start they deserve.”
PSHH’s Learning Centers are located within affordable housing communities on the Central Coast, eliminating barriers such as transportation while giving children consistent access to academic support, enrichment opportunities, technology, and caring adult mentors.
The programs help students strengthen reading and math skills, explore STEM and creative arts, develop social-emotional skills, and build confidence that extends beyond the classroom, PSHH said.
