A driver who struck a juvenile pedestrian and fled from the scene in Lompoc was located after police used the Flock Safety license plate reader cameras.
At approximately 5:20 p.m. Monday, the Lompoc Police Department began investigating a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian and vehicle at the intersection of North H Street and North Avenue.
“The vehicle fled the scene and was not initially located,” Sgt. Scott Morgan said.
Detectives investigating the incident utilized Flock cameras, which identified the suspect vehicle.
“The driver of the vehicle was contacted, admitted to the traffic accident, and was charged with hit and run,” Morgan said.
The juvenile pedestrian, whose name and age weren’t released, was not injured in the incident.
Police did not release the name of the driver, who was identified as a 64-year-old Lompoc resident.
“The Lompoc Police Department reminds drivers to remain alert for pedestrians, stop and render aid following any collision, and call the police,” Morgan added.
Lompoc’s use of the cameras has prompted opposition from residents and concerns by some council members in the past few months.
About four hours after this hit-run collision, Lompoc police investigated an incident involving a 96-year-old pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle in the 2000 block of North H Street. That driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.
