Following a a week-long community installation process that starts Monday, Aug. 17, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church invites the public to the grand opening and consecration of its new labyrinth, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20 at 4575 Auhay Drive, Santa Barbara.

The free dedication event will feature a presentation by labyrinth designer Lars Howlett, who will speak on the history, meaning, and modern use of labyrinths.

The ceremony will recognize George Burtness for his generous gift to St. Andrew’s that made the labyrinth project possible, and pianist Natasha Kislenko will provide live music.

Refreshments will be offered through a community finger-food potluck. Attendees are welcome to bring a dish to share.

Starting Monday, Howlett will be on the church campus to begin taping the labyrinth design. Members of the public and local volunteers are invited to come out, meet Howlett, and watch him work.

The community painting phase begins Tuesday, Aug. 18. Volunteers are invited to sign up for three-hour shifts (9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m.) to help paint the labyrinth paths.

Register to volunteer by emailing Pastor Jen Fraser at pastor@standrewspcusa.org or come to the labyrinth site at 9 a.m. on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Community members of all levels are encouraged to participate. Those who prefer not to paint can still be a part of the build by writing personal blessings, prayers, or intentions onto the foundational tape; keeping the workers company; or dropping off snacks and drinks.
