After record-breaking heat on Wednesday, the weather in Santa Barbara is expected to cool down heading into the weekend and the winter holidays.
The National Weather Service recorded a record daily high temperature of 80 degrees at the Santa Barbara Airport on Wednesday. This is the highest recorded temperature for the area on Dec. 18, and it breaks the previous record of 77 degrees from 1950.
The weather cooled down on Thursday with a high of 72 degrees.
“Today and tomorrow will be on the cooler side (…) and kinda foggy,” said Mike Wofford, a meteorologist with the NWS, on Friday morning.
Forecasters issued a high surf warning for Santa Barbara County beaches, and other Central Coast areas, from Saturday through Friday. Large breaking waves and strong rip currents are expected, the NWS said.
“Surf will be highest across west and northwest facing beaches,” the advisory said. “For the Central Coast beaches, breaking waves of 12 to 18 feet with local sets to 20 feet are expected, except 18 to 25 feet Monday into Tuesday. For the Santa Barbara South Coast beaches, breaking waves of 6 to 10 feet are expected, except 8 to 12 feet Monday afternoon into Tuesday.”
Forecasters also say there’s a chance of rain on Tuesday, Christmas Eve.
Weather Into the Weekend
The temperatures in Santa Barbara and the South Coast will be cooler going into next week.
Friday will see daytime highs in the mid-60s and a drop later into the high 40s at night.
Saturday will also see daytime highs in the mid-60s with some patchy fog and nighttime temperatures in the high 40s with some more fog, the NWS said.
Sunday will bring a mix of fog and clouds with daytime temperatures in the high 60s. The temperature will drop to the low 50s at night.
The cool weather will continue Monday with temperatures in the high 60s and clouds throughout the day, and nighttime temperatures will be in the low 50s.
Temperatures are also expected to drop on Tuesday with a chance of rain and some patchy fog.
Temperatures near Buellton and Solvang will be warmer with daytime temperatures in the low 70s on Friday, but drop to the mid-30s at night.
Saturday temperatures will remain in the low 70s with some patchy weather that will clear up later that day. Nighttime temperatures will be warmer than the previous night with highs in the mid-40s.
The weather will warm up on Sunday with daytime temps in the mid-70s and nighttime temperatures in the mid-40s. Residents may see some patchy fog through the day and into the night.
Monday will remain in the mid-70s and drop to the mid-40s later that night. The patchy fog is also expected to carry over from the previous day.
Tuesday will see temperatures in the high 60s and may also come with some rain.
Santa Maria will see temperatures in the high 60s on Friday, but a drop to the low 40s later that night and some fog.
Daytime highs on Saturday will be in the low 60s with chances of some patchy fog. Temperatures are expected to drop that night to the high 40s.
Sunday will have temperatures in the high 60s with a mixture of fog and cloudy weather. Nighttime temperatures are expected to drop to the high 40s and bring some fog throughout the night.
Temperatures will drop to the mid-60s on Monday and then drop to the high 40s later that night. Residents may see some patchy fog throughout the day with some cloudy skies.
Residents will likely see some rain on Tuesday with temperatures in the low 60s.
