Alexander Southgate, 81, of Santa Barbara passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 21, 2022.
“Alex” was born Feb. 9, 1941, in Santa Barbara to Robert Southgate and Lupe Echeverria. Born and raised in Santa Barbara, he attended the local schools, including Santa Barbara High School.
After completing school, Alex decided he wanted to do work that he could be proud of, so he applied at the city of Santa Barbara Water Department, where he became an expert in working with water pumps and water reservoirs within the city. Eventually, he was re-classified as a D and C water tech.
Alex worked many weekends and beyond a traditional workday into the evenings on main breaks, he and his crew ensured that residents who suffered water interruptions were back to working order. He was proud of his team and their accomplished tasks.
Giving back to his community was his greatest reward. When he decided to retire after 44 years of service, Alex felt he had done what he set out to do. He looked forward to retiring and living a life of relaxation.
Alex will be deeply missed and remembered for being such a nice guy who would do anything to help someone, attentive to those who needed a helping hand, a great listener, and surprising his friends with his craft abilities and gifts. He was one in a zillion.
Alex leaves behind his wife of 31 years Debbie Southgate; his three sons Alec (Kristine), Shawn (Luis), and Brian (Kristen); four grandchildren Nikkoa Southgate, Christopher Hale, Jane Lopez and Matthew Lopez; five nephews and their families; nieces Cecilia Cuevas and Angelica Richardson, who held a special place in his heart; five sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law; and many family members and friends whom he loved and adored.
