A longtime member of the Allan Hancock College Board of Trustees has resigned.
Larry Lahr officially resigned from his position on the board effective last Friday, after more than 26 years of service.
He announced his plans during a board meeting three days earlier, explaining that he would be moving out of the area he represented as trustee.
He served as the president of the community college’s board.
“The college is being left in good hands and in good shape,” Lahr said. “I have full confidence in my colleagues on the board and the college’s staff, faculty and administration. I know that Hancock will continue to prosper and improve in my absence.”
Lahr was elected to his first four-year term as a Hancock trustee in 1994 and filled several stints wielding the gavel.
He attended Allan Hancock College before earning a bachelor’s degree at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in agricultural business management.
“Larry Lahr epitomizes what it means to be a public servant,” Hancock Superintendent/President Kevin Walthers said. “He is known for having a sharp eye for finances, but his focus has always been to ensure students come first in every decision we make.”
The five members of the Hancock College board each represent areas of the community college district.
Lahr represented Area 3, which includes southwestern Santa Maria and Guadalupe.
The college’s Board of Trustees will announce a process to fill the vacant seat at the next monthly meeting at 6 p.m. May 11.
Hancock College’s district encompasses the Santa Maria, Lompoc, Santa Ynez and Cuyama valleys.
The community college is based in Santa Maria with centers in the Lompoc Valley, the Santa Ynez Valley and at Vandenberg Air Force Base, is in the midst of celebrating its centennial.
