The American Scandinavian Foundation (ASFSB) recently awarded several scholarships during an event at the Veterans Memorial Building in Santa Barbara. ASFSB offers scholarships through a partnership with the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, and it encourages its members to apply.

The nonprofit ASFSB was incorporated March 31, 1983. For 36 years prior to that date, the organization was a chapter of the National American Scandinavian Foundation (NASF) with headquarters in New York. NASF was established in 1910 by Neils Poulsen, a Danish immigrant /industrialist, to conduct educational exchange between the U.S. and the Scandinavian countries.

Local ASFSB activities range from discussions about various events; exposure to the arts; a social time to gather, whether for burgers and beer or the annual Christmas party, when attendees celebrate the tradition of Santa Lucia.

The mission of ASFSB is to promote international understanding by preserving and sharing Scandinavian heritage and culture with the community. Chairman of the group is Peter Haslund, president is Cheryl Wright. For more, visit www.ASFSB.net.
