Santa Barbara County Animal Services (SBCAS) took possession of 21 dogs and more than 300 birds after serving a warrant with the Santa Maria Police Department on Oct. 14.
With limited shelter space in all three County Animal Shelters, SBCAS is asking residents to open their homes and foster some of its shelter animals.
Foster homes are needed for pigeons, chickens, cockatiels and parakeets, as well as dogs available for foster placement at any of the county’s three shelters in Santa Maria, Goleta and Lompoc.
Fostering a dog already in the shelter helps alleviate potential crowding and creates space for animals arriving through this response and everyday community needs, SBCAS said.

Community members can visit any shelter to meet an animal and talk with staff about a good match.
Those interested in fostering birds are encouraged to speak with staff about the birds available and their housing needs.
SBCAS provides all supplies and ongoing support.
The three shelters are open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday (closed Mondays):
- Santa Maria: 548 W. Foster Road
- Goleta: 5473 Overpass Road
- Lompoc: 1501 W. Central Ave.
