The community is invited to attend a celebration of Title IX, noon-1:30, Sunday, June 23 on the steps of the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, Figueroa Street side by Anacapa Street.

On that date in 1972, an historical civil rights bill was signed into law, expanding educational opportunities for girls and young women, notably in sports.

From a token two pages in a high school yearbook, girls now fill pages competing in track & field, water polo, tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and the continued expansion of sports to female athletes every year since.

The anniversary event will include speakers Jamie Neushul, the 2020 Gold Medalist and four-time All-American water polo player; and local writer John Zant, whose career spanned more than five decades in sports journalism.

Celeste Barber taught English at Santa Barbara City College for 20 years and has lived in Santa Barbara since 1980. The opinions expressed are her own.
