Aquila John Rich Jr.

It is with great sadness to announce that Aquila John Rich Jr. passed away on Jan. 7, 2026, in Santa Barbara. He was born on June 8, 1951, in Fontana, California.

Aquila is survived by his son Arthur Rich, whom he loved deeply and of whom he was profoundly proud; his mother Alma Rich; brothers David (Judy) and Steven Rich (Jeri); sisters Dawn Shaw (Tom), Lynne Stainbrook and Leigh Ann Unger, and many wonderful nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jane Olson, who passed away in February 2025. He was also preceded in death by his father Aquila John “Jack” Rich Sr.; niece Lauren Patricia Stainbrook; and brother-in-law Garry Unger.

Professionally, John Rich built a career as a flooring salesman, but his life extended far beyond his occupation. At heart, he was an artist.

He expressed himself through multiple visual mediums and continually refined his creative voice, becoming especially skilled in photography in his later years.

His artistic eye reflected the way he saw the world — with attentiveness, curiosity, and finding beauty in the world around him.

Above all else, John was an extraordinary father. He instilled confidence, curiosity and determination in his son, and was a constant source of love, humor, encouragement, and steady support.

He cherished his family and friends deeply, valuing connection, laughter and shared moments.

John’s passing leaves a space of sadness and grief in the lives of those who knew him. Yet more importantly, he leaves behind enduring memories, full hearts, and enriched souls.

His presence, creativity, kindness and love will be carried forward by all who were fortunate enough to have him in their lives.

John’s Celebration of Life was held at Hilltop View in San Bernardino, California, on Jan. 31, 2026.
