A man armed with a soda can is in police custody after assaulting another man during a fight that sent the victim to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital on Saturday night.

Shortly before 7 p.m., the Santa Barbara Police Department received a report about two men involved in a physical altercation in the Foodland parking lot, 1501 San Andreas St., police Sgt. Ethan Ragsdale said.

“The reason for the altercation is still under investigation,” Ragsale said. “One of the subjects then struck the other in the head with a pop can, causing lacerations and injury.”

The suspect also robbed the victim before fleeing from the area.

However, officers located the suspect and arrested him, Ragsdale said.

Witnesses confirmed that the suspect that police had detained was the man involved in the physical altercation, Ragdale added.

The suspect, whose name wasn’t available, will be booked in the Santa Barbara County Jail, Ragsdale said.
