Members of Assistance League of Santa Barbara and Las Aletas will take action during their National Action Week, Feb. 20-26, by holding a children’s book drive.
Each year in February, the 120 chapters of the Assistance League participate in Action Week to celebrate the birthday of founder Anne Banning. The focus has been on youth literacy, raising the awareness of the importance of books for children.
Assistance League members want to put books into the hands of children in the community, encouraging them to read. The books will be distributed to six local nonprofits and children’s service agencies.
Community members can drop off new or gently used books (grade levels pre-K through 12) in containers outside the Assistance League of Santa Barbara’s Thrift Shop, 1259 Veronica Springs Road, during shop hours, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
Donors also can drive up and deliver children’s books, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22 and Thursday, Feb. 24. Monetary donations to buy new books will be accepted as well.
Along with its auxiliaries, Las Aletas and Assisteens, the Assistance League of Santa Barbara members volunteer 50,000 hours a year to improve the lives of local residents. The Assistance League Thrift Shop is the major source of funding for these programs. For more, visit www.assistanceleaguesb.org or https://assistanceleaguesb.org/las-aletas.html.
