A fire in the early morning hours Sunday caused significant damage to a home on Santa Barbara’s Westside, according to the Santa Barbara Fire Department.
Acting Battalion Chief Joe Tieso told Noozhawk that firefighters responded just past midnight after a neighbor reported the fire in a single-family home in the 1700 block of Gillespie Street, between West Islay and West Valerio streets.
Upon arrival, they found the upper part of the structure engulfed in flames, he said.
Crews entered the home and found only light smoke inside, Tieso said, “and they knew right away it was an attic fire.”
Firefighters were setting up ladders to access the roof for ventilation when the roof collapsed, he added.
It took about 90 minutes to fully control the blaze, Tieso said, and firefighters remained on scene until about 5 a.m. doing mop-up and overhaul.
One resident was at home and sleeping when the fire broke out, Tieso said, but he was able to leave the house without injury.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
