The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s (SBMM) Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series will present Robin Lloyd, author of the new historical novel “Hidden Cargo,” 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 at 13 Harbor Way, Ste. 190, Santa Barbara.
Lloyd will discuss the inspiration behind his latest work, followed by a book signing.
The event is free to attend for SBMM Navigators Circle members; $10 for all other members; and $20 for the general public. Tickets can be purchased here.

“Hidden Cargo” is a suspenseful mystery set in the turbulent months following the Civil War, focusing on a shadowy, often overlooked chapter in American history.
In the fall of 1865, reports began to surface that freedmen from Florida and Louisiana were being kidnapped and re-enslaved on sugar plantations in Cuba.
Lloyd’s novel follows Navy Lt. Everett Townsend, who is sent from Key West to Cuba on a secret mission to uncover the truth behind the disturbing reports.
Through Townsend’s eyes, readers are plunged into the complex, tension-filled world of post-war Cuba, where American, Cuban, and Spanish interests collide.
“Robin Lloyd’s work offers a unique blend of historical accuracy, rich narrative, and deep emotional resonance,” said Greg Gorga, SBMM executive director. “We are thrilled to have him back to share his experiences and his passion for storytelling with our community.”
In addition to his journalism career, Lloyd’s early life on the island of St. Croix, where he grew up sailing and working on his family’s dairy farm, influenced his connection to the sea — a theme that permeates his literary work.
Lloyd is a graduate of Princeton University and Columbia University’s School of Journalism.
Lecture attendees will be able to view SBMM’s latest exhibit, Majestic California Piers, featuring 31 photographs showcasing iconic piers throughout California (from San Simeon to Oceanside). The show will be on view until Jan. 19.
All lecture seating is first come, first served. SBMM members are invited to a pre-lecture reception from 6:15-6:45 p.m., which provides early access to the event. Learn more about becoming a member.
