A 21-year-old man was arrested Saturday evening after a 24-hour standoff at Sunstone Winery in the Santa Ynez Valley.
Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office authorities arrested Frederick Miles Rice after he barricaded himself in a room “armed with a sword and vandalizing property.”
The standoff began about 6:15 p.m. Friday on the 100 block of North Refugio Road.
The Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiation Team and the Special Enforcement Team responded and convinced Rice to surrender at 6:57 p.m. Saturday.
He was taken into custody without incident, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. Authorities said he will be booked at the Northern Branch Jail for misdemeanor burglary and felony vandalism, with a bail of $50,000.
“We are extremely grateful to our amazing local law enforcement officers who are the real heroes here,” Teddy Cabugos, president of Sunstone Winery, told Noozhawk. “They worked around the clock to bring a peaceful end to the situation. All families and people involved worked closely together and supported each other throughout, which we will continue to do.
“Thank you to everyone in our community that has reached out with their overwhelming amount of support. And again, the people that need to be highlighted here are our amazing men and woman from our local law enforcement for what they do everyday, and what they did today, we are forever grateful to you,” Cabugos said.
