A man was arrested after attacking a stranger inside a private Montecito residence and then barricading himself in an upstairs bathroom Wednesday evening, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office said.

Russell Maxwell Phay, 42, of Reno, Nevada, was booked into jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, kidnapping and other allegations, the Sheriff’s Office said.

A large law enforcement presence converged on a mansion at the 1000 block of Fairway Road near Channel Drive at 4:30 p.m.. It was reportedly at the home of hotelier and Beanie Babies mogul Ty Warner.

The initial report to law enforcement was a home invasion robbery or possible vehicle theft in progress, sheriff’s spokesperson Raquel Zick said.

Outside the home, responding deputies found a female victim who had been severely injured in an assault, and she was transported to the hospital by ambulance, Zick said.

The suspect was still inside, she said.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, and Santa Barbara Police Department surrounded the residence and called in the Special Enforcement Team and Crisis Negotiation Team, Zick said.

Law enforcement searched the home and determined all other occupants had escaped, and that the assault suspect had barricaded themselves in an upstairs bathroom of the oceanfront home.

“Deputies, including a crisis intervention trained Co-Response Team deputy attempted to talk the suspect out of the bathroom,” Zick said.

Phay climbed out of the window onto a roof and then jumped to the ground, attempting to flee, Zick said.

Phay was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m.

Zick said he was booked into the Main Jail on suspicion of burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, battery with serious bodily injury, kidnapping and obstruction.

An arrest log shows Phay was booked into jail on suspicion of attempted murder and remained in custody Thursday with $1 million bail.

A Santa Barbara Police surveillance drone helped track where Phay was during the incident, Noozhawk photographer Peter Hartmann reported from the scene.

A county helicopter also circled the area, which is near the Santa Barbara Cemetery and Butterfly Beach.

Sheriff’s officials said early Thursday morning that the investigation is ongoing and there is no indication the victim and suspect knew each other.

Authorities from multiple agencies surrounded the home and blocked off Channel Drive during the incident response.

The roadway was reopened and people were allowed back into the area around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Zick said.
