BeachSMART, a collaboration to inform and improve the way sediment is managed in Santa Barbara County, will host an open house 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Louise Lowry Davis Center, 111 W. Victoria St., Santa Barbara.

By focusing on natural watershed processes and exploring nature-based solutions, the BeachSMART project aims to build long-term resiliency for our beaches, creeks, and coastal communities.

BeachSMART includes the following components:

  • An analysis of the existing processes and programming associated with sediment management along the South Coast.
  • An evaluation of the feasibility and implications of alternative sediment source-sites and sediment receiver sites for shoreline and creek enhancement.
  • An evaluation of alternative sediment management methods.
  • An evaluation of implications for the regional coastal environment.

“Our partners include the Santa Barbara County Promotores Network and we will be working with local environmental NGOs, CBOs (Community Based Organizations), tribal representatives and you,” the group said.

The project is funded in part by the State Coastal Conservancy.
