Bella Nuño hit three home runs and Mia Reveles added another to pace Dos Pueblos to a 7-4 win over El Capitan of Merced Friday to open play at the Righetti Best of the West tourney.
Kaitlyn Ashby went the distance in the circle for the Chargers.
Nuño led off the bottom of the first with a towering shot to left.
In the second, Lysandra Pimental drew a two-out walk and Nuño hit a 2-0 pitch in almost the same spot to put Dos Pueblos up 3-2.
Mia Reveles then hit her home run to put the Chargers up two.
El Capitan got into the homer act with a two-run shot in the top of the third to tie it.
Nuño’s third homer of the game was an inside-the-park shot. El Capitan outfielders made a valiant effort to keep what was a sure home run ball in the park, and collided with each other and the fence and were shaken up on the play. Nuño speedily rounded the bases for home run No. 11 on the year.
“What a day for Bella and Mia today,” Dos Pueblos coach Mike Gerken said. “So happy for both those seniors to create a great softball memory. Both girls put so much time into hitting and it is paying off.
“This was a scrappy team and we needed every RBI we could get.
Riley Monroe added two sacrifice fly RBI for the Chargers.
“I’m proud of Kaitlyn Ashby’s performance today,” Gerken said. “She showed a lot of maturity to rebound after a tough second and third inning. She focused on keeping the ball down and didn’t give up a run over the last four innings.”
Dos Pueblos is now 14-7 overall and remains 7-2 in Channel League play.
