An original theater production about Sarah House, a Santa Barbara hospice that serves low-income families, will be performed June 28, at Trinity Episcopal Church Parish Hall. There will be a second presentation on July 3 at the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara.

“As the major annual fundraiser for this cherished institution, this is the third theater event that stage director Peter Lackner has created, mentored and co-produced to raise awareness of the magic of Sarah House while also inspiring donations for its yearly operating costs,” organizers said.

The show can be seen as a sequel to last year’s successful collaboration between Sarah House and the theater department of Laguna Blanca School.

The performance will feature three stories written by the hospice house manager Paloma Espino, based on her two decades of devoted involvement with the residents’ final phase of life.

“It reveals the special attributes that make Sarah House so effective in providing a safe home and a family feeling for primarily low-income and destitute persons who might otherwise end their lives in squalor or utterly alone,” organizers said.

“Because these residents cannot afford hospice care, donations to Sarah House directly benefit the quality of their end of life experience,” they said.

All proceeds from ticket sales — $40 general admission, $25 for students — will go directly to Sarah House.

“However, we are hoping to inspire additional donations from those who are moved by our theater piece, and from those who cannot attend the live events,” organizers said.
