Bertha Maria Castelo

Bertha Maria Castelo, 75, of Santa Barbara passed away in her home on Feb. 4, 2020. She was born in Santa Barbara to the late Edward Barrera and the late Betty Rodriguez.

Bertha was preceded in death by her younger brother Richard Barrera Morelos, and her eldest sister Dolores Gonzalez. She has one surviving sister, Julia Romero.

Bertha attended Dolores Elementary Catholic School, La Cumbre Jr. High School, Santa Barbara High School, and Santa Barbara Beauty College. She was married to Tomas Castelo from 1963-1973.

She is survived by her three children Linda (James) Gallegos, Michelle Castelo and Benjamin Ybarra; eight grandchildren Renee Silva, Deanna Gallegos, Anthony (Briset) Gallegos, Tina-Marie Castelo, Leah Robles, Joseph Robles, Isaiah Ybarra, Angelina Ybarra; 10 great grandchildren; and her partner of 17 years, Dan Michel.

Bertha was lovingly known as “Auntie Bertha” by numerous nieces and nephews, most of whom she provided childcare for as they were growing up. She loved to laugh and make other people laugh. The children in the family were always drawn to her because of her fun-loving personality.

Bertha’s favorite place to work was the Copper Coffee Pot Restaurant, where she worked as a server. She also worked as a home health-care provider for 12 years.

Bertha spent her last days with her partner Dan as a resident of the Garden Court on De La Vina, an independent senior living community in Santa Barbara. She enjoyed listening to the live music they have on the weekends, and how beautifully they decorated for Christmas.

One of her favorite pastimes was helping to make gingerbread houses during Christmastime; she made so many that her fingers would hurt, but she loved every minute of it. She also enjoyed assembling the beautiful flower arrangements that were displayed throughout the facility each week.

The residents there all loved her and described her as kind, thoughtful and loving. She loved giving compliments and daily hugs to all the ladies who lived there.

This description truly captures the essence of Bertha. She loved with her whole heart, and truly enjoyed helping others and making people happy. She will truly be missed.
