Betty Jean Carmack Hendrickson passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on April 13, 2026. She was born in Arizona, Nov. 7, 1929.
She married Monte Hendrickson on Sept. 8, 1950. They are the parents of four children Terry Neilsen (Barry); Jan Hendrickson, Jed Hendrickson (Deborah), and Tracy De Hart (Richard).
Betty moved to Santa Barbara with her family during World War II and considered Santa Barbara as her home.
Betty was the oldest of five children — the rest were boys — but she held her own. Betty’s parents Cecil and Gladys Carmack were concerned about her engagement to Monte because of his racing and fast cars. But they came to love him like an additional son.
Betty worked many years in the family business, Santa Barbara Monumental, alongside Monte, while raising their children.
She participated in bowling leagues, and helped raise funds for and participated in the construction of the Santa Barbara Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
She served in many capacities at church, teaching children’s classes, young women classes, working with the adult women of the congregation, and serving as a director of the Family History Center. Her community service included many years of service as a Santa Barbara Courthouse docent.
Later in life, Betty and Monte traveled across the United States and Canada in their fifth-wheel trailer. Together they served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at the Kirtland Ohio Historical Sites.
Betty is survived by her four children; brother John (Shirley) Carmack; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are Friday, April 24 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints chapel, 2107 Santa Barbara St., Santa Barbara.
Viewing will be at 10 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. and burial at Santa Barbara Cemetery.
