A bicyclist was taken to the hospital Sunday evening after tumbling over the oceanside cliffs in Carpinteria, according to the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District.

The 60-year-old man was discovered lying at the base of the cliff by a woman who was walking on the beach, said fire Battalion Chief Robert Kovach.

The incident occurred at about 5 p.m. between Bates Beach and the Carpinteria Pier, approximately a mile north of the Rincon beach ramp in the north parking lot area.

“The patient was conscious and complaining of back pain,” Kovach said. “The patient had fallen from the railroad track area above after striking a rock while riding a bike.”

The man, whose name was not released, fell 70-80 feet to the beach below, landing between large rocks.

He told emergency personnel he was lying on the shoreline unable to move for about an hour before the woman walking by heard his calls for help.

Firefighters and AMR paramedics initiated medical treatment before the victim was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Details on his condition were not available.
