A bicyclist was injured Friday night when she was struck by a train while riding along the railroad tracks near the Santa Barbara Zoo, according to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.

Firefighters and other emergency personnel were dispatched at about 6:20 p.m. to the incident near the 400 block of Ninos Drive, fire Capt. Jon Turner told Noozhawk.

“First responders found a patient who had been riding a bicycle adjacent to the track, and was struck in an upper extremity by a passing train that approached from behind,” Turner said.

He added that the Amtrak train sounded its horn and utilized emergency braking before the collision.

The female victim, whose name was not released, was taken by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment of moderate injuries, Turner said.

Details on her condition were not available.

There were no injuries reported on the train.
