A bicyclist died Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle in north Santa Maria, according to the Santa Maria Police Department. The driver of the vehicle then fled the scene.

At approximately 8:40 p.m., personnel from the Santa Maria fire and police departments, along with an American Medical Response ambulance crew, were dispatched to the scene of the incident initially reported as being near West Main Street and Blosser Road, Sgt. Rob Morris told Noozhawk.

He said the injured bicyclist was nonresponsive at the scene, and was transported to a local hospital where the victim died.

The driver fled the scene, and police were investigating the incident, including working to identify the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run crash.

Officers also were working to identify the victim so next of kin could be notified.

Police pinpointed the scene as being Blosser Road at Church Street, which is south of Main Street.

The northbound and southbound lanes of Blosser Road, between West Main and West Cypress streets, were expected to remain closed for several hours while traffic officers investigated the incident, according to police, who advised people to avoid the area.
