Santa Barbara High’s boys basketball team team started the new year on a high note, roaring out to a 27-9 first-half lead en route to a 45-34 non-league win at San Luis Obispo on Saturday.
“We were working great in multiple facets of the game in the first half.” said Dons coach Corey Adam. “We got off to a quick start in the third quarter as well but got complacent on both offense and defense.”
San Luis Obispo stepped up its intensity in the second half but never cut the deficit under double digits.
“It was a good learning experience for us that we have to keep our foot on the throttle,” said Adam.
Bryce Warrecker scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Dons and Erik Strandburg played a solid all-around game wth six points and seven rebounds. Jackson Gonzales chipped in six points and set the tone defensiviely, said Adam.
It was Santa Barbara’s second win over SLO. The Dons won 73-35 during their Holiday Classic after Christmas.
Santa Barbara (9-6) plays at Santa Ynez in a Channel League opener on Tuesday.
